Our bike-loan scheme

The club runs a bike-loan scheme which is designed to help children try out cycling on a reasonable bike. We know good bikes can be expensive, with kids outgrowing things really quickly, and it’s a big investment to buy a racing or mountain bike without knowing if your child will want to take up racing or mountain-biking.

Penge Cycle Club has a variety of bikes of different types and sizes which can be loaned out on a short-term basis. Some of our bikes are youth specific and are suitable for 8-16-year-olds but some of our smaller adult bikes can also be hired by youth members.

We reserve our cyclocross bikes for first-claim Penge CC members only. That means to race on our bikes, you must be representing Penge Cycle Club, and not another club.

For club members, there is no charge for a bike loan. Bikes may be borrowed for a month. If nobody else is waiting for the bike you have, a monthly loan may be extended for an additional month.

For non-club members, there is also no charge for a bike loan. Available bikes can be borrowed for up to 3 club rides before you decide whether to join as a member.

Here’s how our loan scheme works:

Bike loan arrangements

  1. Check bike availability by emailing Katie at bikeloan@pengecc.org with the title ‘Bike Loan Request‘.
  2. Download the Bike Loan T&C’s, read and sign.
  3. Download the Bike Loan Agreement Form. Fill in and sign.
  4. Email Katie with completed and signed forms, then you’ll be contacted to arrange a time to collect the bike. (If you don’t have computer access for printing/signing, tell Katie.)
  5. Go to SE20 Cycles at the arranged time.
  6. Collect the bike, use it and look after it.

Using the bike

Once you collect the bike, it is your responsibility to take care of yourself and the bike by following the T&C’s you have signed.

The bikes are maintained and serviced by SE20 Cycles. You are expected to care for and maintain the bike and return it to the shop at the end of the loan period in a good, clean state. When stored at home, the bicycle should be kept in a covered, locked location.

If it’s a cyclocross bike, we hope you will represent Penge CC and race at a cyclocross event. We expect the bike to get dirty and a bit battered over time, but you should look after it as if it were your own pride and joy. Broadly, if you bust it, we expect you to put it right.

Returning the bike

  1. Clean it and check it for any faults.
  2. Take it back to SE20 Cycles and report any issues.
  3. Email Katie at bikeloan@pengecc.org to say the bike has been returned.

At the moment, we have 9 adult and 4 youth bikes and may add more to the collection. See our main bike-loan scheme page and look at the list of bikes available.
